Daily Chess Improvement: Young Carlsen Chess Tactic! Chess tactic, Puzzle Solving Very young Magnus was white (to move). Can you play like Magnus? Magnus Carlsen vs Helgi Gretarsson (2003) r5q1/pp1b1kr1/2p2p2/2Q5/2PpB3/1P4NP/P4P2/4RK2 w – – 0 1
1. Bg6+ Kxg6
If 1…..Rxg6, then 2. Re7+ Kf8(forced) 3. Rxd7 disc. ch. Ke8 (forced) and 4.Qe7#
2.Qh5#
1. Bd5+ cxd5
2. Re7+ Kf8 (Kg6 3. Qh5#)
3. Rxd7+ Re7
4. Qxe7#
Your queen jumped over a pawn to get to h5 and 3…Ke8 was available.
So not only I missed a simple mate in 2, I also messed up my mate in 4. Sad.
🙁
Bg6+ if Kg6 then Qh5 mate
if Rg6 then Qe7 mate
Whooosh !!! Never saw it was that simple. 🙂
Don’t feel bad- when this puzzle was first posted in November of 2012, I looked at it for 10 minutes before realizing the mate in 2. I kept looking at every other bishop move, especially Bh7. Yikes!
Almost all Bishop moves win.
I could play chess like Magnus if I learnt to imitate his mannerisms and made a Magnus disguise for myself. Is that what you meant?
