Elliott Claims Wheeler Chess Open
Fide Master Warren Elliott made a long awaited return to superb chess form this weekend when he captured the 2012 Robert Wheeler Open. Elliott accomplished the task with an unbeaten score of 3.5 points from 4 games, including notable victories over National Masters Peter Myers and Brandon Wilson. The tournament, which was held May 26-27, is held annually in honor of National Master Robert Wheeler’s decades of dedication to local chess. Wheeler is still active as an internationally titled Fide Arbiter (FA) and Fide Candidate Master (FCM).
Fifteen-year-old Candidate Master Shreyas Smith struck another dramatic, monumental performance. He also finished on a impressive 3.5 points after he successfully secured a draw with Elliott and upset the current National Champion Damion Davy in rounds two and four respectively. Final round action also saw Peter Thomas set back National Master Daren Wisdom to join the leaders with 3.5 points. Ultimately, tiebreaks were employed and the gold and silver medals were awarded to Elliott and Smith respectively.
The intermediate section for players with a Jamaica Chess Federation rating under 1600, took place concurrently and finished in a three-way tie. Based on the tiebreaks, Nathan Hinds was adjudged the winner, while Elias Issa and Sheneal Gardener were awarded the silver and bronze medals.
Rameze Thorpe swept the section designated for amateur players, finishing an outstanding perfect score of six points from six games. Aulanni Kidd and Kyra Potter trailed closely behind in second place, each with five points.
Categorical prizes were also awarded for “the best rural player” to Kevron Campbell, the “best female player” to Women’s Fide Master (WFM) Deborah Richards-Porter and “the best junior player” to Shreyas Smith.
The next event on the chess calendar is a historic online under-14 chess match between Warren Elliott’s chess academy, ‘WE Chess’, competing with teams from New Jersey and Columbia. The match is scheduled for June 2 at 2:00 pm on the Internet Chess Club (ICC).
