I actually started to buy chess DVDs instead of books.

My first chess book was by Schiller. I burned it 2 years later.

I think Hertan’s Forcing Chess Moves makes a good candidate…

Dvortsky’s book came out in 2006, not 2008. In 2008, good ones are:

“How to play chess endgames”, by Muller and Pajeken

        “Practical Endgame Play” by Grivas

        Maybe MCO-15.

And I’m looking forward to “100 Endgames You Must Know” by De La Villa. It is by New in Chess, and all of their books seem to be top notch.

What chess needs is a moderm version of Ruben Fine’s The Ideas Behind the Chess Openings. I viewed John Watson’s Mastering the Chess Openings volume I and was thoroughly dissapointed. Maybe we need a GM or Kasparov to do it.

Comment about Dvortsky’s Endgame Manual, second edition (2006). The second edition puts the important material in a faint blue color that is extremely difficult to read. The first edition has it in a somewhat darker blue that doesn’t strain the eyes, and there isn’t a whole lot of difference between the two editions.

Second the notion on Hertan’s book. It reminds me very much of Van Perlo’s endgame tactics book (also a must). Hertan’s book is far from a typical puzzle book.

I think Gary Lanes books are good.
So are books of famous players games like Capablanca etc.
