      All games were required to start with the Ruy Lopez opening

      Following the Ruy Lopez Masters round robin, which was won by Bulgaria’s Ivan Cheparinov, the 4th Ruy Lopez International Festival concluded Saturday after the rapid Ruy Lopez Open. The Open was organized by Agrupación Ruy López de Zafra and Club Linex-Magic de Mérida, the playing venue was Museo Etnografico at Villafranca de los Barros-Badajoz.

      The tournament run over 9 rounds of Swiss pairings, with time control of 15 minutes per player. 52 people signed to participate, while the first prize was 1500 EUR worth. All games were required to start with the Ruy Lopez opening – 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5.

      Italy’s Fabiano Caruana’s took the trophy after edging Cheparinov on better tiebreak. Both players, members of the Linex-Magic Club, finished with 7.5 points, a full point ahead of rest of the field.
