‘Fanatic’ brings chess game to PPL

      Saturday, 20 March 2010

      By Rusty Nixon Correspondent

PLYMOUTH — Thanks to a local chess fanatic, some lucky residents will be able to learn the game or improve their skills.

The Plymouth Public Library will be offering a pair of Saturday chess “camps” — the first March 27 in the Guild Room and April 24 in the Laramore B Room beginning at 10 a.m and ending at 11:30 a.m

“Dan Clough is what I would call a chess ‘fanatic’,” said Deb Beck, of the PPL. “He’s one of those guys who just loves the game and carries his own chess board with him. He wants to help teach people and we decided we’d have a couple of sessions helping people who wanted to learn the game.”

The library will provide chess sets for those who attend the session or you can bring your own set if you are a more accomplished player.

“We’ll take whoever wants to learn to play, no matter what age,” said Beck. “Anyone who wants to learn can come. We’ll have at least 10 to 12 chess sets set up for people to play on. Sometimes people have a lot of those unique chess sets and they can bring one and show it off, too.

“We just want to make sure we get the word out that people can come,” she said.

Chess players should make their way to the Plymouth Public Library Saturday, March 27 and April 24 from 10 a.m to 11:30 a.m.

For more information, call the library at 574-936-2324.

        More libraries should offer chess.

This sounds like a very worthwhile scheme that is great for the community… as anon (above) says, there should be more of this sort of thing. R
