Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Cidade de Ferrol

      Aug 22, 2011

The 26th Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Cidade de Ferrol, organized by Juan Vicente Rodriguez Rey, was held from 15th to 21st August in the coastal city of Ferrol, Galicia, Spain. The tournament is part of the Gallego Chess Circuit.

100 players participated in the main 9-round Swiss event. Grandmasters Aleksa Strikovic and Dragan Paunovic from the nearby La Coruna, Dragan Barlov from Tenerife, and a large contingent from Cuba were among the top seeded players.

Cubans dominated the tournament and eventually their nationals took top four places (on tiebreak). FM Alexey Fernandez Cardoso and GM Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez shared the first place with 7.0 points each, but the trophy goes to Fernandez Cardoso.

The prize fund was 9700€ in total, distributed over 20 regular and 20 rating prizes. First place is 1000€ worth.

Ferrol or El Ferrol is a city in the province of A Coruña in Galicia, located on the Atlantic coast in north-western Spain. As of 2007, it has an urban population of 77,859 and a metropolitan area population of over 241,528.

The city has been a major naval shipbuilding centre for most of its history, being the capital of the Spanish Navy’s Maritime Department of the North since the time of the early Bourbons. Before that, in the 17th century, Ferrol was the most important arsenal in Europe. Today, the city is also known as the home of the shipbuilding yards of Navantia.
