      FIDE election update

Anatoly Karpov, Chess election, Chess politics, FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov

      Dear Presidents, Delegates, Federations,

I welcome you to our new FIDE election campaign “One World. One Vision.”

2010 will prove to be another important year for FIDE as we look forward for the next four years and review our previous achievements.

On our web pages, you will find a comprehensive review of our achievements as well as our electoral program and direction for FIDE.

This vision is part of a long term strategic thinking process and it has been fundamental for the success we have had these last fifteen years. The campaign management, as well as running FIDE, is a team effort not a one man mission.

We open our arms to anybody who wishes to contribute ideas, or volunteer their services. Over the next four months, we will openly discuss issues, criticism, suggestions and generally anything which can help the chess world and everybody inside it, become more professional.

We will continue to practice democracy and ensure that everybody has an equal voice in the development of FIDE.

      Karpov’s Letter to Delegates

      Dear Delegate,

I am delighted to inform everyone who has supported me for the presidency of FIDE that our campaign is proceeding smoothly. Many countries have already officially nominated me or publicly endorsed my candidacy, including some that previously supported my opponent.

In regard to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, he has no letters of support from voting federations. His campaign is in chaos. His past allies have recognized we are an alternative to his poor management and, as a result, one by one have started taking my side. Clearly many feel the same way as I do, that 15 years of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s disreputable administration is more than enough.

My opponent’s only response to this loss of support was to spread false rumors that I will eventually withdraw or reach a “deal” with him. These actions demonstrate Ilyumzhinov’s desperation. I am absolutely committed to this campaign and will never withdraw, back down or agree to any deal. I have committed to my family, friends and supporters that I will fight through the election. I am more confident than ever of our victory.

I have dedicated all my life to chess. With your help, we will enter a new era that will restore the reputation of our great game and benefit the entire chess community. This is my duty and the legacy I wish to build with you.

We kindly urge you to visit www.KARPOV2010.org to keep up with the latest developments in the 2010 FIDE Presidential Campaign. My campaign welcomes your suggestions and would like to hear about your federation’s activities.

      Very best regards,
      Anatoly Karpov

You left out the third letter.

        Dear Chess World,

I am not going to lie. I will hurt you, steal from you, and make a mockery of chess with all it’s Grand Masters. I did this to the USCF as a career chess politician and compulsive liar and thief. This qualifies me to be FIDE President.

One sounds like he cares about the future of FIDE. The challenger sounds like he has no real idea other than trashing the incumbent.

Karpov’s campaign does seem to be built on negativity and trashing the other guy. If he has something to offer other than his name as a past world champion, he should state it.

It’s sad that Karpov is learning the dirty political tricks from Bill Goichberg and his mindless sychophants.

Ilhumzhinov’s letter reads as if he and FIDE are one and the same – inseparable – almost like he thinks FIDE belongs to him. That is arroganet and unhealthy. FIDE should remain separate to the post of president because that is an elected post. Its also ironic how criticism is encouraged and the word democracy is used, whereas recent events seem to indicate the exact opposite is true.

I am really surprised that the contribution by ‘Third leg’ has been allowed to stand by Blag Admin.

I really don’t understand people’s complaints with Karpov. For years most of the chess community has complaint about the current president and his actions. Now, there is a chance to change the status quo…shake up things in the establishment and send a message that we want change….and people also complain about it. I mean, how worst can Karpov be…really? These are not the ideal candidates…..but come on…..why still support the current president? Why not give a chance to a new presidency? I personally would like Karpov to win. Is not that I strongly favor him….but I really don’t like most of the things that are going on with FIDE right now…..and a vote for the current president is a vote to support those items I’m so disappointed about.

It would be nice for once, to see intelligent and supported arguments against Karpov…and not the rants that are usually posted: ‘Kasparov is the devil’, ‘Karpov will steal money’, etc.
