        Not quite 30 seconds…

        I focus on the two escape fields d5 and d7 (d5+? Kd7, Bb5+? Kd5).
This leads me to the key move

        1. Be6!

Immensly strong move. It threats d5#, but also, if Q moves away from 8th rank, b8=N#. Impossible for black to defend!
        E.g.:

        1. … Qxd4
        2. b8=N#

This was two moves, how can black prolong it?

        1. … Qd8! (only delay)
        2. b8=N+ Qxb8 (only move)
        3. d5#

        or even
        2. d5+ Qxd5 (only move)
        3. b8=N#

        1. Be6

This blocks black’s only retreat. Now white has 2 mating threats d5 and b8=N. Black cannot prevent both, nor does black have any counter checks.

        1. … Qd8
        2. d5+ Qd5
        3. b8=N#

        1. Be6 Qd8
        2. b8N+ Qxb8
        3. d5#

Certainly not in 30s. I simply can’t resist looking at and trying to make 1.d5 work. Though it doesn’t, it did help me find the solution since taking d7 away from the black king was clearly critical.

        1. Be6 Qd8 2. b8=N+ Qxb8 3. d5#

        or

        1. Be6 Qd8 2. d5 Qxd5 3. b8=N#

Be6 will do the job and the pawn is unstoppable to check the black king

I found Be6 after like 5 seconds, but it took me like a minute to find Qd8 as a defense. So I didn’t solve it in 30 seconds, but I solved it for white in under 30.

        After Qd8 either b8=N+ Qxb8 d5# or d5+ Qxd5 b8=N# works.

        1. Be6! and the threat of 2. d5 mate leaves Black with only two options, other than 1. … Qa8+ which just delays the mate with d5 by a move.

        1. … Qxd4
        2. b8=N mate

        or

        1. … Qd8
        2. d5+ Qxd5
        3. b8=N mate

        Mirror solution

        1. … Qd8
        2. b8=N+ Qxb8
        3. d5 mate

        Under 30 seconds; fairly obvious.

OMG – that was brilliant. I admit, I did not see it by myself and used a software analyzer to see the brilliancy here. Wow.

        Hi Susan Polgar,

        Well,nice puzzle.

By the by – Are you saying “White to move and checkmate in 3 in favor of Black ? ” – thats possible in 30 sec – lol

As of now – couldn’t find 3 moves mating combination for White.

I am going to sleep – its 1:00 AM in Indian time.

I will try to find a solution for this chess puzzle tomorrow – if none finds a solution in mean time.

        1. Be6 theatening d5# or, b8=N# if the BQ leaves the 8th rank.

        1. Be6 Qd8
        2. d5+ Qxd5
        3. b8=N#

        1. Be6, threatening
        2. d5#

        1. … Q leaves the 8th row, e.g., Qxd4
        2. b8N#

        1. … Qa8+
        2. bxa8B#

        1. … Qd8
        2. b8N+ Qxb8
        3. d5#

        1. … Q anywhere else on the 8th row
        2. d5#

It took much longer than 30 seconds. How is it possible to solve this problem in half a minute? Is there a method?

        OH God!
Yesterday, I spent 6 to 7 mintues staring at this position. But I could not progress even a bit. I could not find a way for white to win, leave alone the mate in three.

But today, when I saw the position again, I got the idea in less than 30 seconds.

        Nice one!
White locks the black king first with

        1. Be6!!

        White is threatening d5#

        1…… Qxd4 allows
        2. b8=N#!

        1…… Qd8 to take on d5,
        2. b8=N+! Qxb8
        3. d5#

        LOL!!!
