MANILA, Philippines – Paulo James Florendo and Jedara Docena ruled the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the 2009 National Junior Chess Championship at the Cabagnot Training and Tourism Center in Kalibo, Aklan, which ended Thursday.

The Zamboanga City native Florendo posted consecutive wins against Antonio Chavez and Jerich Cajeras in the eighth and ninth rounds to finish with seven points.

National Master Haridas Pascua was in a group that finished second. He was joined by Mari Joseph Turqueza and Franz Robert Grafil with 6.5 points.

Docena, a native of Bohol, was forced by Lovelyn Medina to a draw for six points winning the crown by one-point over closest pursuer and Far Eastern University teammate Rulp Ylem Jose.

Docena won five of her matches and drew the other two.

Florendo and Docena each earned the P15,000 and P10,000 top purse but importantly earned slots to the Philippine team in the World Junior Chess Championships this year in in Mar de Plata, Argentina.

Florendo and Docena will join Grandmaster Wesley So in the Philippine team. – GMANews.TV
