Fourth grader takes PDS chess title

PRINCETON TOWNSHIP — Princeton Day School fourth- grader Gillian Share-Raab of Newtown, Pa., has taken first place after going undefeated in the Open Section (players grades K-12 ranked up to 1000) at the final PDS Saturday Chess Tournament of the year.

“Gillian’s attacking style makes her a formidable oppo nent,” said tournament director Bonnie Waitzkinsaid. “She is a great competitor who puts relentless pressure on her oppo nents until they crumble.”

In addition, PDS teams cap tured First Place in the K-1 Sec tion, Second Place in the Novice I Section and Second Place in the Reserve Section for players grades K-8 up to 800.

At PDS, chess is taught in kindergarten and first grade to stimulate intellectual growth in stu dents, develop their problem- solving skills and teach sportsmanship. Princeton Day School hosts monthly scholastic chess tournaments which attract stu dent players from regional K-12 schools who compete as individuals and as school teams. The tournament, held last month, included 136 players from 40 schools. Tournaments will re sume in October.
