      – Vietnam’s FPT Group has proposed to cancel the annual FPT International Grand Master Chess Tournament due to the economic crisis.

On May 5, 2008, FPT and the Vietnam Chess Federation (VCF) signed an agreement, under which the two sides will combine to organize the annual FPT International Grand Master Chess Tournament, with the participation of international Grand Masters.

VCF is responsible for registering the event with the International Chess Confederation to turn it into an official event. The first tournament was scheduled in September 2008 but it failed. FPT announced the cancellation of it again.

      – The First Division Chess Tournament is underway in Hanoi until February 28. The event has the participation of International Grand Master Dao Thien Hai, who recently left Dong Thap to join Military team. Nguyen Van Huy, the national champion 2008 left Bac Ninh to play for Hanoi.

The Tournament is divided into two stages. In the first stage, players compete in nine matches under the Swiss system. In the second stage, they play in one-one form to race for the 1-20 positions.
