Girl’s chess tournament at Tech attracts national media attention

      LUBBOCK,TX (KCBD) –

More than 3,000 girls all over the world competed to get to Lubbock this week for a chess tournament. Out of all those girls only 50 made the cut to compete are competing in a chess tournament that is hosted by world champion and Texas Tech instructor Susan Polgar. This is the 8th year that the chess tournament has offered scholarships and this year $120,000 in prizes.

Dyhemia Young, one of the girls competing in the tournament, made national media not for competing in the tournament but for the challenge it was for her to be able to compete.

“My journey here, it was tough because I had a lot of situations that I had to overcome and it almost made me to the point where I didn’t want to come. But I had to think of the possibilities and the doors it would open for me. And, I met a lot of people I didn’t think I was going to meet.”, says Dyhemia.

Susan Polgar, head of the S.P.I.C.E. program at Tech, says “We had some special participants in the event. One of them was Dyhemia who got a lot of media attention recently because of the L.A. Times cover story because of the circumstances that she’s coming from; how difficult it was for her to get here.”

      The event wraps up Friday.
