The 2010 SPICE Spring Invitational will take place in March (13-19) at the beautiful campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. Robert Hess got his 2nd GM norm last year in this event and he went on to become a GM shortly after that, along with a break through year. Who will get the GM norm(s) this year?

– IM Irina Krush (USA) 2492 USCF – 2455 FIDE (GM norm)
– IM Dean Ippolito (USA) 2534 USCF – 2447 FIDE
– FM Eric Hansen (CAN) 2426 USCF – 2406 FIDE
The names of the final IM and GM will be confirmed shortly. GM norm is expected to be 6 points (out of 9 games) and IM norm is expected to be 4 points (out of 9 games).

We wish IM Julio Sadorra of Texas University to join SPICE
Wouldn’t he need to go to Texas Tech to get that invite? Isn’t that one of the benefits for attending Texas Tech?
IM Julio Sadorra has already achieved his 2nd GM Norm and will be a great opportunity for him to achieved his 3rd and final norm.
Then shouldn’t he attend Texas Tech where big events are held every year?
I guess he got a ches scholarship from University of Texas in Dallas.
Did he apply for a chess scholarship to Texas Tech? Wouldn’t that be what any student should do?

I couldn’t care less to see Sadorra in the SPICE event. I rather see Wesley So in the SPICE Cup. I agree with others that this isn’t a charity event. If Sadorra wants to play, let him apply to Texas Tech. Why does he deserve an invite more than Texas Tech students? Nonsense.
Please keep it civil. There are only 10 spots in this event and Texas Tech students automatically get the first spots. This is one of the big benefits for being a part of the SPICE program.
In addition, organizing a norm event is complicated. There are usually 30-40 requests for an invitation. The SPICE events committee must make sure that all the conditions (ratings/schedule/nationality, etc.) are met.
Obviously it is impossible to accommodate all the requests.

We are just wishing if IM Catalino “Julio” Sadorra (FIDE 2466) could get an invite because he is closer to Lubbock, Texas now. We just wish to see a Filipino chess player who is capable of issuing a great challenge to everyone and watch him play live in the internet for the Filipino audiences to watch. Pretty sure that a lot of us will be following all his games. Thanks!
