HA NOI — International grandmaster Le Quang Liem has been invited to participate in SportAccord World Mind Games 2011, which will open tomorrow and end on December 16 in Beijing.

He will compete against 15 rivals in three categories – rapid, blitz and blindfold chess.

Liem’s chief rivals will be Russian Sergey Karjakin, Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk, and Anish Giri from the Netherlands.

Liem, the only Vietnamese representative in the chess event, was unbeaten against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov from Azerbaijan, Ruslan Ponomariov from Ukraine and Gata Kamsky from the US at this year’s Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting and Aeroflot Open in Moscow.

Liem finished second behind Ponomariov at the Dortmund tournament in July and won the Aeroflot Open for the second time in a row in February.

The winners of each category in Beijing will be awarded US$11,000.

As part of the SportAccord games, there will be a xiangqi (Chinese chess) competition. Participants will be Asian champions Nguyen Thanh Bao and Ngo Lan Huong in the male and female categories. The winner of the men’s competition will receive $10,000, while the female champion will be get $7,000.

The mind games include chess, bridge, go, draughts and xiangqi.

Total prize money will be $1 million. The event attracts 32 contestants in every sport. — VNS
