      MANILA, Philippines — Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez is the leading Filipino chess player in the SDAT-RMK 4th Chennai Open Grand Master Chess Tournament in Chennai, India.

      The Binan, Laguna native beat Swayams Mishra of India in 37 moves of the Slav defense in the ninth round on Tuesday.

      Gomez now has 7 points after nine rounds game of play in the event that attracted 297 players from 15 countries.

      Sharing the limelight is GM Oliver Barbosa of Taytay, Rizal.

      Barbosa now totes a total of 6.5 points after defeating International Master (IM) Babu N Sudhakar of India in 40 moves of Slav defense.

      Also with 6.5 points is Cebuano GM Richard Bitoon, who brought down IM Toth Christian Endre of Brazil in 44 moves of French defense.

      GM Mark Paragua of Bulacan split the point with FIDE Master Ghosh Diptayan of India in 29 moves of Slav defense for 6 points.

      Meanwhile, co-leaders GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus and Yu Ruiyuan of China ended their respective games to a fighting draw.

      They share the top place with 7.5 points each.

      The India chess campaign is part of Philippine Chess Team preparation for the upcoming 38th World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey. – By Marlon Bernardino
