MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ top chess player, Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So, had a good start late Thursday night in the Indonesia Open Chess Championship in Lamerieden hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia.

The 18-year-old from Bacoor, Cavite defeated International Master (IM) Muhammad Ivan Situru of Indonesia using the advantageous white pieces.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines president/chairman (NCFP) Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. said: “It’s a good start for Wesley, I hope he can perform well in Indonesia chess.”

With the win, the World’s No. 90 and 4th seed So shares the 1st to 33th place. Among those tied with him are Emmanuel Emperado, GMs Oliver Barbosa, John Paul Gomez, Richard Bitoon and IM Oliver Dimakiling.

The tournament offers a total prize money of US$55,000. The winner takes US$10,000, while the runner-up will receive US$6,000. – By Marlon Bernardino
