Grandmaster Liem earns four-year scholarship in US

      Last update 24/10/2012 14:39:33 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – Grandmaster Le Quang Liem has been awarded a four-year scholarship at Webster University in the US, a worldwide institution.
Liem is the first Vietnamese person to receive a scholarship (approximately $140,000 value) to develop his academic studies thanks to his outstanding achievements in chess.

Liem said he might choose to study finance and banking, which is also his major at Sai Gon University.

Liem, world No 44, is the first ever chess master to win the Aeroflot Open in consecutive years. He also triumphed at the Spice Cup, an invitational tournament for six of the best players in the world, on his debut last year.

Why should it go to just Americans if this is a global university? That’s racism.

There are many Americans at Webster. So what’s the big deal? Why the racism?

What’s this idiotic idea about giving scholarships just because someone is poor? Scholarships should be given to the most talented and deserving players. Should Harvard admit someone because they’re poor? How ridiculous!

obviously criteria should not be poor alone but talented and poor. but i wont call you ididot. wasnt there a talented and poor african girl recently without gov support? how about talented and poor nguyen ngoc truong son of viet? except liem, no current spice players can equal his achievements. that said, susan has done great to get money for these players.

What talented poor African girl? If she doesn’t know how to contact Polgar then she’s not bright enough to get a scholarship. If you can’t help yourself then why should other help you? Polgar’s email and contact info can by easily googled in seconds. What a stupid excuse.

If they don’t reach out to Polgar, it means that they don’t care about the scholarship. They need to help themselves.
