This spring was the first time in the history of Gulf Shores High School that the Dolphins participated in the County Chess Tournament.

GSHS competed in the A and B divisions. The A team consisted of Drew Tranchina, Ralph Vasquez, Corey Craig, Ty Moreira and Lee Hauser. The A Team played well but fell to the veteran chess teams in the county.

The B Team, however, went undefeated and was crowned County Champions of the B Division for 2009. The B Team members are, Billy Dickenson, Destin Rivera, Bevo Walker, Ian Meadows and Alex Torkildsen.

Assistant Principal Mark Glassford said, “This was the first chess trophy that Gulf Shores has ever received in the history of the school, and we are very proud of these students and are expecting a strong effort from these players next year.”

The Chess Club has about 20 members, and the top 10 competed against each other to play in the county tournament.

The Chess Club will conclude this years activities with a hamburger banquet at the Wheel House Restaurant on Wednesday.

“I am so proud of these students, and I am excited about the interest in playing chess. It gives these students an opportunity to showcase their talents,” Glassford said.
