      H & B tie for 1st at Cannes

      Cannes Chess Festival

      This popular event finished in the south of France yesterday. In the main Open tournament the two highest rated players prevailed in the end.

      Among those who tied for third place, IMs Joseph Sanchez and Sabino Brunello made a GM norm.

      Final Standings:

      1-2. GMs Bauer (FRA, 2610) and Hamdouchi (MAR, 2599) – 7/9
      3-6. IM J. Sanchez (PHI, 2461), GM J. Horvath (HUN, 2542), IM S. Brunello (ITA, 2461), Quillan (ENG, 2357) – 6½

        All right! Joseph Sanchez made a GM norm. I don’t know how many this makes it…it may already be his second

        I stand corrected here! Joseph Sanchez has already made his third and final GM norm. And with his rating calculated at 2507, that should make him the 11th Filipino International Grandmaster.

        Congratulations to him.

        There are actually (including joseph) only 10 Filipino GMs. Rosendo Balinas, the second ever Filipino GM, died in the late 90s.
