It is a good event. If you live anywhere close to Milwaukee, you should come on out and play in this event. It would also be nice to see some GM show up from somewhere in the country and surprise everyone at this event.

With all the extra prize money for the females being donated by goddesschess.com, perhaps some women GMs or IMs wondering through the close vicinity of Milwaukee will drop by to play some chess.

With these kinds of prizes for women, I’m giving serious thought to attending the tournament in drag.

We’re trying to encourage more female players to come out and play in the Hales Corners Challenges, thus the enhanced prize structure for Challenge XII. In addition, my chessplaying friend, Shira Evans (of Computer Labs 4 Kids) is traveling from Chicago, and I (Jan Newton), will be playing on Saturday. Shira’s rating of about 1733 qualifies her for the Open. She used to play in several tournaments a year but is rusty now – her play has been online and mostly unrated. I am unrated and expect to lose all 4 rounds, but I know I will have a great time! The folks at Southwest Chess Club who run this event have invited me each Challenge, and I have always said no. I suspect (although I cannot prove), that Tom Fogec fell off his chair when he read my email saying that I would be coming to play. This will be my first OTB tournament, I’ve never played with a clock! G/60 sounds awfully fast! I will encourage Shira to take what Goddesschess prize money she wins. If a miracle should happen and I actually get a draw, I will gracefully decline my prize 🙂
