Czech GM Lubomir Kavalek was born on the 9th of August 1943 in Prague. He left Czechoslovakia during the Soviet invasion of 1968 and later settled in the United States. Kavalek was one of the world’s leading players in the 1970s. For example, he took part in the Montreal-1979 supertournament.
Later Kavalek was the executive director of the GMA. He is a well-known chess author and journalist, writing for the Washington Post.

I remember talking to GM Kavalek in the mid-’80s, trying to get him to talk to our political club. He was dubious, perhaps because of my overt enthusiasm for Kasparov to beat Karpov. As Kavalek had played Karpov many times, perhaps I should have been more discreet.
People don’t remember Montreal 1979 much any more. It used to be celebrated as one of the strongest tournaments of all time. Because of rating inflation, Category XV isn’t what it used to be. Still, not many events can boast of the likes of former world champions Karpov, Spassky, and Tal.
This guy looks creepy!
He puts the creepy in “creepy chess player”.
Isn’t that GM Walter Browne in the forefront of photo?
Yeah, the guy with the sun glasses looks like the unibomber.
