Lubbock (Texas), Sep 21 (IANS) Pentala Harikrishna drew his first round against Icelandic Grandmaster Hannes Stefansson in the SPICE Cup International Invitational chess tournament Saturday.

The category 15 tournament is being promoted by Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) and has assembled the strongest field of chess grandmasters in US round-robin history.

The 10 players in the fray are all grandmasters and will play a round robin Sep 19-28 at the Tech student Union Building. There are other chess events being held simultaneously but this is the main attraction.

The round-robin tournament is being held in the memory of Grandmaster Samuel Reshevsky.

Round one results: Varuzhan Akobian beat Eugene Perelshteyn 1-0; Julio Becerra drew with Alexander Onischuk; Hannes Stefansson drew with Pentala Harikrishna; Gregory Kaidanov lost to Kritz 0-1; Victor Mikhalevski beat Kamil Miton.

Pairings for Round two: Leonid Kritz – Eugene Perelshteyn; Kamil Miton – Varuzhan Akobian; Alexander Onischuk – Victor Mikhalevski; Pentala Harikrishna – Julio Becerra; Gregory Kaidanov – Hannes Stefansson.
