      Hat trick for Gupta

Abhijeet Gupta, Corus, Holland, Wijk aan Zee

      Third straight win for Abhijeet
      Hindu, India

NEW DELHI: World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta upstaged second seeded British David Howell to jump to the third spot in Group ‘C’ after seven rounds of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk ann Zee on Saturday.

Abhijeet’s 57-move victory was his third on the trot and fourth in the competition. The Bhilwara-boy sacrificed a rook for a bishop and pawn in the middle game but did not get the desired compensation. He finally got the breakthrough and emerged an impressive winner. He now has 4.5 points and trails the leaders, Tiger Hillarp Persson and top seed Wesley S, by half a point.

Meanwhile, D. Harika continued her impressive run by drawing with Wesley So. The World junior girls champion played white and matched her rival in the 45-move encounter that followed the opening lines of Slav Defence. Peace was signed when the players were left with a rook and two pawns each. Harika, seeded 10th, is presently sixth with 3.5 points.

However, in Group ‘B’, top seed K. Sasikiran (2.5) suffered his third loss and gave last-man Henrique Mecking his first victory in the competition. Playing white, the Brazilian nailed Sasikiran in 38 moves after claiming a knight in a tactical battle.
