Not exciting, but the openings were interesting

Obviously neither of them had any drive or motivation to win. They kept offering draws almost immediately after the opening. What a waste of time to have followed these games. No wonder Anand keeps dropping lower and lower on the FIDE chess rating list. FIDE just wasted $2.5 million.

I hate the idea of settling this with rapids or blitz. The Draughts World Championship Match is a fixed number of games (24) and the challenger MUST win on points – no extra games – otherwise the World Champion retains his/her crown. A much better system I think, it encourages attacking.

Too many early draws. Anand seemed bored in the beginning and then woke up after he lost.

Why didn’t Gelfand play 3…e5!? in that Grunfeld/Samisch game?

Perhaps Anand who was well ahead on time during the last two games, could have pressed on a bit longer? Gelfand’s time troubles,do not bode well for him in the rapids. But the stress is still on Anand and despite being hailed as one of the best in fast time controls,he has been known to lose when the stakes were high.

Well a drawn result should mean that Anand retains his title. Remember Kramnik – Leko? Kramnik needed to win the last game to draw and retain his PCA title, which he did. Leko only needed a draw to become new PCA world champ!. So the old system where the champ only needs a draw to retain his title is best. Then the challenger is forced to come up with fighting chess.
