      Humpy Koneru, Protest

      PRESS RELEASE

      22nd October, 2009.

I am very unhappy to inform that I have withdrawn my participation in the Asian Indoor Games 2009 to be held at Vietnam due to some nasty circumstances caused by Mr. D.V. Sundar, Secretary, All India Chess Federation (AICF). As you know Chess is a mind game. So, I need to be mentally peaceful to perform well. I was put under lot of pressure and stress by Mr. Sundar that I am upset and not in a position to participate in a prestigious event for the country.

Today, I am bringing all the happenings between me and Mr. D.V.Sundar to make the things clear to everyone.

      Regarding Asian Indoor Games 2009

After confirming my participation in Asian Indoor Games 2009 I requested IOA (Indian Olympic Association) to allow my personal trainer Mr. Koneru Ashok (Dronacharya Awardee) to the event. They responded favorably and asked me to get a letter from AICF. I requested the Secretary, AICF for the same through email. He didn’t respond. Then my father contacted him by phone and made a request for which he refused and kept some terms. He bargained with my father that he will see that AICF bears his expenses if I confirm my participation in all the forthcoming Women tournaments. I gave my confirmation to the tournaments accordingly. But Mr.Sundar did not keep up his promise and he said that in case my father accompanies me for the tournament he has to bear his expenses. I do not want to make this an issue. As Asian Indoor Games means playing for the country, my father decided to bear his expenses and accompany me as my trainer.

Permission to play in two International tournaments abroad

In the meantime, I happen to apply for permission from AICF to play in two International tournaments abroad. As I am representing PSPB (Petroleum Sports Promotion Board), I am supposed to get permission from AICF to participate in International tournaments as per its guidelines. Generally AICF will give permission unless the tournaments applied are clashing with the Official tournaments like World Championships, Asian Games etc.

But to my surprise, Mr. Sundar didn’t give me permission to play in the Gibtelecom Chess festival to be held at Gibraltar from 26th Jan. to 4th Feb., 2010. The reason is that an International tourney will be held at Chennai during those dates. Let me clarify that, it’s just an International tournament, not an Official event.

As a player I must have the freedom to choose the tourney I am going to play. Gibtelecom is a prestigious event where I can compete with my peers as a World No. 2 women player. In this event world class players like present and former Women World Chess Champions and many more Super Grandmasters will be participating.

This is not the first time such incident took place.

Here is the full press release.

I really feel sorry for Humpy who is being traumatized by Mr. Sundar’s high-handedness. This is a pathetic situation created by Mr. Sundar and without any delay he should apologize and mend his ways. FIDE and other members of AICF should look into the allegations by Miss Humpy and if Mr. Sundar is found guity then he deserves being sacked from his post with immediate effect. But I have serious doubts if FIDE will be of any help as they are always themselves under the scanner for their inability and political imbroglio. I emphathize with Humpy’s situation and hope Mr. Sundar stops acting like a BIG BOSS.

GM Koneru should move to the US and deal with Mr. Goichberg. Then she understands that he got it good in India. This is what women have to deal with in chess.

Humpy went the wrong way, by public posting, instead of reporting the matter to the FIDE Judge panel Chairman for criminalistic chess matters. Now she will get backfired and delisted from India. Let’s offer her assylum in advance!

        Good for her!

An administrator can be replaced. A world-number-2 is a world-number-2.

I don’t understand why these feudal regional organizations are needed in today’s world. Can’t people simply play chess, and organize their own tournaments? Why do we need a country chess federation, or a stodgy FIDE for that matter?

Also, if you want people to come to your tourney, just make it attractive. Perhaps pay them what their real worth is to you?

These administrators are silly and idiotic.

I find disgusting the way they treated GM Gopal, and now the way they treat Koneru Humpy.

If Mr. Sundar has become a grumpy old man, he should just step aside and let younger people deal with this kind of thing.

India is a rising power; it needs a sound infrastructure to support, encourage and properly develop its talent.

Tyrannical officials like Mr. Sundar delay the development of talent, in the same way that some officials in the USCF have become detrimental to the development of chess in this country, due to their shortsightedness and desire for power.

        Fellow Netizens,

Let’s organize and create a new system.

Since Susan is known to all professionals and patzers alike, let’s have her lead it.

Let’s brainstorm what you want in that system.

Propose that it be a *flat* system — with no concept of country and silly things like that. We are one planet.

When Lasker was a grand-master, it made sense to have that title — he was only one of a few. Having 1000s of GMs and IMs makes no sense. Let’s just have a rating system, and that’s it.

If you must have a title, have a “Hall of Fame” instead. It’s essentially a GM, but you can’t get there at 14. You get inducted after your career is over, similar to the way Michael Jordan was inducted in the Hall of Fame this year, or the Nobel Prize was awarded to folks in Physics with hindsight — for stuff they did many years ago.

We can have online tournaments, OTB.

To make it interesting, introduce time controls of bullet matches (1-minute games or 2-minute games).

        What sayeth thou?

It was GM Gopal’s turn first.
        Now it is GM Humpy.
Next in line is none other than Viswanathan Anand. He will have to apply to AICF in participating in Sofia match with Topalov.

Kirzan are you enjoying this Moron’s actions?
A game like cricket survives just due to India.
Susan is also a bit happy that Judith will retain No.1 status for some more time. Ha Ha

        It’s a serious proposal.

Perhaps you are are afraid of challenging the status quo?

Or perhaps you are too invested in it? Are you trying to get a GM/IM title? Don’t get me wrong, it’s great if you are on the path to GM/IM.

I just find the current structure arcane in the modern internet world.

Well, one where you don’t have to ask a bureaucrat’s permission to go to another country to play chess for one. And one where their federation can’t tell you where you have to play. Basically any country that cares about liberty at all.

This Felliow thinks that he is onthetopof the world. He does not have a title or political backing. He came into power by cheating Ummer koya who organized great chess in India.

Some fellows think that Indian chess is the monopoly of one state. Chess federations needs to be manned by retired and live chess professional in 50:50 proprtions to have sensible and equitable decisions.

Humpy is a wonderful player , a prodigy and world talent. Sunbar is a moron and a non entity.
God save Indian Chess and chess players.

Tail piece:- Why he is targeting only non brahmin, non tamilian players?

Sign up a contract with Pepsi and participate in the tournaments.
Or Move to a country where they appreciate your talent like what Anand did !
