G-STAR RAW MAGNUS CARLSEN BEATS THE WORLD IN THE G-STAR RAW WORLD CHESS CHALLENGE

Today, in the Cooper Square Hotel in New York City, the world’s Number One ranked chess player, 19-year-old Magnus Carlsen, defeated thousands of online players from all over the world in the G-Star RAW World Chess Challenge.

During the game three Chess Grandmasters, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave from France, Hikaru Nakamura from the United States and Judit Polgár from Hungary, suggested a move each on which the registered World Team could vote. The World Team put up a stiff resistance but, in his aggressive but controlled style, Magnus emerged the winner in 44 moves and 2.5 hours.

After receiving his award, handed out by Hollywood actress Liv Tyler, Magnus stated: “I am very excited to have won. It was quite a difficult challenge and the public seemed to have chosen all the right moves, so I’m very happy with this end result.”

RAW World Chess Challenge Ambassador Garry Kasparov, who already anticipated Magnus’ victory, emphasizes the unique character of the RAW World Chess Challenge: “This really is a historical match. It’s not often people get the chance to play the world’s best player.

The World Team really gave Magnus a run for his money, but in the end Magnus is the well deserved winner.”

The RAW World Chess Challenge forms part of G-Star’s global Fall/ Winter advertising campaign to be launched as of September 2010, featuring Carlsen and Hollywood actress Liv Tyler in images captured by Anton Corbijn.

Magnus Carlsen became a Grandmaster at the age of 13 years and is the youngest player in history to achieve the World Number One rank.
