IHSA State Chess Tourney Comes To Peoria
PEORIA – Students from across the state are competing in Peoria this weekend, but it’s not your typical state championship on the line.
The Civic Center is hosting this weekend’s 37th annual IHSA State Chess Tournament.
The tournament is the largest in the nation and features around 1,400 students from 128 Illinois schools.
The tournament is in a team format, which officials say make the event a more worth-while experience for those involved.
“We like the team format because it really involves a number of kids at the schools, instead of just the very best players and it helps develop some team camaraderie, as well,” says IHSA executive director Scott Johnson.
The tournament runs Friday and Saturday.
The public is invited to attend for free.
