      Iowa State Fair Speed Chess Champs Crowned

      DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2010) (readMedia)– The 2010 Iowa State Fair Speed Chess tournament will be remembered for drawing competitors from across the country, as well as an undefeated run in the Open Division by a gubernatorial candidate.

      Longtime political activist and gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Narcisse of Des Moines went undefeated in play to win the Open Division title. Hank Anzis of Marshalltown took second place and David Skaar of Story City earned third place.

      In the Scholastic Divisions of play, competitors from as far as California and Colorado won awards.

      Competition results:

      High school:

      1) Adam Hammes, Oskaloosa

      2) Eric Weilup, Delmar

      Jr. High:

      1) Isaac Spain, Lost Nation

      Grade 6:

      1) Zachary Gordon, Sperry

      2) Sarah Steinke, Cedar Rapids

      3) Luke Higginbottom, West Des Moines

      Grade 3-5

      1) Theo Schrader, San Francisco, Calif.

      2) Josh Hammes, Oskaloosa

      3) Emma Gordon, Sperry

      Grades K-2

      1) Alexander Schrader, San Francisco, Calif.

      2) Caleb Szczawiski, Ft. Collins, Colo.

      3) Russell Pearson, Des Moines

      “Non Stop Fun” at the Iowa State Fair runs through August 22. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
