Is America ready for a woman in charge?

General Manager, Kim Ng, Los Angeles Dodgers

No, not Hillary Clinton. She will not have a chance in 2008. But another woman may get her chance.

Kim Ng Given Permission to Discuss Becoming Baseball’s First Female GM

Filed under: Seattle, Mariners, AL East, MLB Gossip, MLB Biz

Baseball, not too shockingly, has never had a female general manger. Ever. Even in the 1930’s! But Kim Ng, an assistant GM with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been given permission by Ned Colletti to speak to the Seattle Mariners (note: should they actually ask), so sayeth the L.A. Times. Here is the full story.

      About Kim Ng:

Kim Ng (pronounced ANG) enters her seventh season as Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. She is one of only two female executives in Major League Baseball to hold such a position in baseball operations and was the first woman to interview for a general manager’s position in Major League history when she did so with the Dodgers in 2005.

Ng’s primary responsibilities are to assist General Manager Ned Colletti in player acquisitions and contract negotiations in addition to coordinating player transactions. She oversees the club’s arbitration efforts, player development and professional scouting departments and manages the day-to-day operations of the baseball department including the medical, clubhouse and team travel divisions.

Considered one of the future leaders of baseball, Ng was recently tabbed one of “10 to Watch” by Baseball America in its 25th anniversary issue saluting the most influential people in the game. Additionally, she was featured by Newsweek during its year-end “Who’s Next?” edition in 2006.

      Here is her full information.

Kind of a silly question. Baseball has female owners, but somehow we’re supposed to think a female GM would be a big deal. Who’d even know? How many GM’s can the average player even name?

I think it’s one of those cases of people liking to pat themselves on the back for how prejudiced they aren’t, compared to all those other people out there. Really, the other people aren’t either, but who wants to hear that?

She appears to have put in her time and knows the business – and it is a business. Her NOT being a former big league player or other auxillary may be viewed as a hindrance by some but as a business, it may be a plus – it allows her to be a bit more objective.
