      Ivanchuk, Khanty-Mansiysk, World Cup

      Vassily Ivanchuk retires
      10:30 / 11/27/2009

Ukrainian Grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk announced his retirement from professional chess. He made such decision after being defeated by Filipino chess player Wesley So in World Cup 2009.

“It was not just a match, it was a crucial game. I would take it easy if my opponent would be much stronger than me or well prepared. But I lost and it is a destiny sign. I start new life with new aims. Chess… I will be just a chess fan now. I will follow the games of my ex-colleagues,” Ivanchuk stated in the interview with Sovetsky Sport daily.

It is probably only the disappointment of losing. Morozevich said something similar and stayed. I hope it isn’t true.

Of course it’s just disappointment…. but it’s also sadly true that Ivanchuks’ time is simply over. He’s from the past.
Kasparov dicovered much earlier that there is no point in competing against the young computer-generation, even if he (Kasparov) could maybe be still on top today…but it would be a tough job to keep up with the latest opening variations…

Wesley So just defeated Kamsky with black. Maybe that will ease Chucky’s feelings, and make him realize that this boy is the real deal after all.

Ivanchuk is not from the past. He can still play wonderful chess. Besides, the World Champion is 40 years old. The older guys can use computers too you know.

I hope it’s true. Ivanchuk should go out and enjoy his life now that he’s made a mark on the chess world. For his sake, I hope he does retire.

I hope Ivanchuk considers a coaching job for Wesley So. If he failed to become World Champion himself, why not help train a future challenger? Wesley has the talent, but has long needed an excellent coach. And Chucky has the chance to outdo Kasparov.
