MANILA, Philippines—Grandmaster John Paul Gomez of De La Salle University made history Thursday night when he bagged a fifth UAAP Athlete of the Year award in ceremonies held at the Bahay ng Alumni in the University of the Philippines campus in Diliman, Quezon City.

The reed-thin Gomez was the biggest star of a night – when the Most Valuable Players of the different UAAP events were gathered – for powering La Salle to the men’s chess title and emerging as the country’s ninth Grandmaster during the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.

The 22-year-old mechanical engineering student, who set a record by becoming the first athlete to win the AOY five times, topped the local qualifying for the Olympiad team which later wound up 46th overall.
