1. g4 should do it. If black pushes a pawn white hits and wins the race to mate on the 8th, however black K must stay in the NW corner to guard the a pawn. So 1. … Kb8 2. a7+ Ka8 3. Ka6 is indicated and black is in zugzwang and must push a pawn nonetheless.
A simple win for White. The plan is to force black to move a pawn through zugzwang.
1. g4 (Black is now rather helpless as any pawn move allows White to promote first) … Kb8 2. a7+!? (breaking a golden rule never to move a pawn to the 7th rank with check, but here the aim IS to stalemate the Black King) … Ka8 (otherwise the pawn promotes for an easy win) 3. Ka6 (stalemating the Black King and forcing a pawn move) … f5 (or …h5, the outcome is the same) 4. gxf5 and the pawn promotes first with checkmate.
g3 white wins

… Kb8
2. a7+!? (breaking a golden rule never to move a pawn to the 7th rank with check, but here the aim IS to stalemate the Black King)
… Ka8 (otherwise the pawn promotes for an easy win)
3. Ka6 (stalemating the Black King and forcing a pawn move)

4. gxf5 and the pawn promotes first with checkmate.
g4, take the pawn and queens. Whats there to think about? Am i missing something?
1.g4 is obvious, but you would be surprised at how many non-novice chess players would miss this. Definitely a worthwhile puzzle to post.
