      Kaluthara International Chess Festival (Experiment 2)

      International Rating Tournament

      The Experiment II, The International Rating Chess Tournament organized by the Kaluthara Chess Club was a great success with 300 odd participants. International Master, Romesh Weerawardane won the Championships after a very close battle, in a 4 way tie with 8 points and having better tie breaker. Romesh who is the 1st International Master of Sri Lanka earned the beautiful Trophy with the Gold medal and Rs. 28,750/=. Anuruddha being unbeaten had to satisfy with the 2nd place to earn same cash award with the Silver Medal. Buddhika Amarasinghe won the 3rd place with bronze medal and the same cash award while Wiman Bhagya also being unbeaten had to satisfy with the 4th place on tie breaker and earn Rs. 28,750/=. Elath Mathanga De Silva was fifth and tied with Osheen De Silva with 7.5 points. JMMP Fernando, MAN Danushka, Kasun Wimalasooriya, shared the 7th place with 7 points.

      The event was held from 11th to 15th January 2014 at the Medical Research Institute, Nagoda Kaluthara with 9 rounds. The Kaluthara Chess Club under the leadership of Mr. Dayal Siriwardena, the president and Mr. Sumal Horawalavithana, Secretary organized the event for the 2nd consecutive year. Manisha Suchini Gunaratne won the Women’s Championship with 6.5 points while tying with Pevinya Pieris. She earned the butiful Trophy with the Gold Medal with Rs. 8,000/= and Pevinya had to satisfy with the Silver Medal and the same cash award. Shelani De Silva won the Bronze medal.

      The opening Ceremony was held under the patronage of Mr. Geoffrey Borg, the CEO of Global Chess and he made the 1st move to start the Championships on the Board of top seed GC Anuruddha. Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya was the Chief Guest at the Awarding Ceremony just concluded yesterday.
