Karpov to appear in Oak Brook

Anatoly Karpov, Illinois, Mikhail Korenman, Scholastic chess

International chess events come to area; legend Karpov will be guest star
      By Jeff Vorva
      Tribune reporter

Orland Park and Oak Brook will host some of the best young chess players in the world at two upcoming events, and Anatoly Karpov, considered one of the best chess players in history, will be a guest at the Oak Brook event.

On March 24-25, the Orland Park Cultural Center will play host to an international invitational featuring nine Russian chess stars, and on March 31-April 1, the Oak Brook DoubleTree hotel will host the third Intercontinental Scholastic Team Championship. Former world champion Anatoly Karpov will meet with parents, coaches and players on April 1.

Mikhail Korenman, a Willowbrook resident who runs the Karpov International Chess Institute in Orland Park and organized the two events, said it was a “great honor” to have Karpov appear.

“He is like the Michael Jordan of chess,” Korenman said. “He is a great champion, peace maker, and long-term investor in children’s welfare around the world.”

Karpov was the world champion of chess from 1975 to 1985 and 1993 to 1999.

Some of the top current players in the nation — Alexander Onischuk, Yury Shulman and Anna Zatonskih – will also attend.

The first Scholastic championship was held in Skokie in 2010 and in Kansas last year.
