Anatoly Karpov, Chess election, Cuba, FIDE

Anatoly Karpov will Visit Cuba this Month
by ACN — last modified Jun 16, 2010 09:33 AM

Former Russian world chess champion Anatoly Karpov will arrive in Havana on Friday for a visit at the invitation of the Cuban sports authorities, the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) announced on Tuesday.

A note published by the www.jit.cu website reads that the visit” the former player also visited Cuba in 2004 and 2008” will take place in the context of the 45th Capablanca Memorial that is underway in the Cuban capital.

During his stay on the island until June 26, Karpov will meet with local sports authorities and with participants in the ongoing tournament in honor of the former Cuban world champion, Jose Raul Capablanca.

In his previous visits to Cuba, the Russian former player visited the health and recovery facilities in Tarara, in the eastern part of Havana, where victims of the Chernobyl nuclear accident are being attended to. Karpov, world champion from 1975 to 1985 and from 1993 to 1999, is currently running for the post of president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

I’m not sure if Karpov will have a chance. He doesn’t have enough votes.

Seems Karpov is gaining votes every week, traveling around the world. He is on a roll!

In contrast to the current FIDE president, Karpov isn’t comitted to another day job. He can dedicate himself to chess full time.
