Russian opposition announces ‘Day of Dissent’
      13/ 01/ 2009

MOSCOW, January 13 (RIA Novosti) – The Other Russia opposition coalition plans to hold a “Day of Dissent” in Moscow on January 31, an executive committee member said on Tuesday.

“The organizing committee of the March of Dissent has declared January 31 the “Day of Dissent” in Moscow,” Alexander Averin said.

A number of rallies will begin simultaneously across Moscow at 2:00 p.m. (11:00 GMT) to demand the resignation of the government.

The Other Russia coalition, an umbrella group of opposition parties that includes chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov’s United Civil Front, has accused the government of failing to tackle the consequences of the current financial crisis.

The protesters will also demand that the constitutional rights of Russians, including the freedom of assembly, be respected, Averin said.

A spokesman said organizers of the individual rallies would decide for themselves whether to apply for permission from the authorities.

The most recent opposition marches were held in Moscow and St. Petersburg on December 14.

In downtown Moscow more than 90 people were arrested for trying to hold an unauthorized opposition rally, while in St. Petersburg some 60 people were detained.

Kasparov and the other protesters are truly heroic. I fear for their safety.

        Go Gulag Garry!

Russia needs another dissident to blame their failures on!

You are the cliche sacced pawn and your opposition has all of the queens.

as far as Gulag is concerned, i think for now Garry is safe. Russian government utilized him brilliantly (I have to give them credit) during last elections and perhaps they can still use him. As a state_ist, Garry offers no real alternative to the “bears”. Neither they are afraid of his protests nor even they are afraid of the fall of the current regime. Communist party elite did very well for themselves in the post-coomunist Russia, and the current elite will do well in the state the lefty democratic statists will create.

Garry is a good thing for the Americal regime, too. Lemmings listen to mainstream media about a hero somewhere far away. They don’t care for their own freedom which is being forsaken for “national security” and “financial stability”.
