Two Hurricane students tie for second at state Chess Championship

HURRICANE, W.Va. — Hurricane High School students Katherine King, a junior, and Clinton Poff, a senior, individually tied for second place in the 40th annual West Virginia Scholastic Chess Championship on April 5.

Karen Nowviskie, Putnam County Board of Education director of early childhood education/community outreach, said King and Poff competed against 30 other West Virginia students and came away with four wins in a five-round tournament.

“As the only two students from Hurricane High, they garnered enough team points to win a Fourth Place team trophy,” she said. “As they competed against four-person teams, their finish is impressive. In all, King and Poff finished only one point behind the first-place team and one-half point behind second and third.”

King is the top-rated female scholastic player in West Virginia, and Nowviskie said this has qualified her for the Susan Polgar Tournament of Champions to be held this summer. This tournament will include the top female player from each state. This will be King’s third time as West Virginia’s representative to the Polgar tournament.
