      100 students to test chess skills Saturday

      County’s best K-12 chess players to match up Saturday at Foothill HighThe best young chess players in Kern County will be determined on Saturday, March 20 at Foothill High during the Kern County Scholastic K-12 Chess Tournament.

      About 100 students from 10 public or private schools will compete in the annual event to be held in the Foothill High cafeteria, said event organizer Wade Tavorn. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with competition starting at 10 a.m.

      “This is a showcase event for the chess skills of many of our local students and we’re excited about the quality of the individual and team competition we’re expecting this year,” said Tavorn, who teaches business and computer classes at Foothill High.

      Competitive categories by grade level include K thru 3rd, 4th thru 6th, 7th thru 8th, and 9 thru 12th. Winners will be eligible for the next level of the national United States Chess Federation (USCF) competition. Registration will be available on the day of the competition.

      Entry fee is $20 prior to March 17 and $25 thereafter. Also, competitors are required to be members of the USCF. Membership in the USCF can be purchased or renewed on the day of the event.

      The public is invited and there is no admission fee.

      The last round of actual chess competition is expected to begin about 2:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the event. The event is expected to conclude about 6 p.m.

      Foothill High is located at 501 Park Dr. in northeast Bakersfield.
