Salinas City Council Recognizes Kid Chess Players
      Last Update: 7:23 pm

SALINAS, Calif.- Chess is often seen as a challenging game for most people, but not for many youngsters in Salinas.

Last night, the city council recognized the top elementary school chess players in the Alisal Union School District at their council meeting. As part of their celebration, students played speed chess games outside of the rotunda today.

School officials say that playing chess helps keep kids off the streets.

“These students may have succumbed to the crime, the violence, the gangs and the drugs,” says Chess Coach Alberto Murillo. “Chess is just something to do to keep them motivated, dedicated and wanting that feeling of becoming champions.”

The first 100 people that played a speed chess game today with the champion students received a free chess game.
