      Kotanjian and Sargsyan are new Armenian Champions

      The 2014 Armenian Chess Championships were held on 11-21st January in Yerevan. Both men’s and women’s events were 10-player round robins.

      Grandmaster Tigran Kotanjian emerged surprising winner of the 74th Armenian Championship for men after edging the 2011-Champion Robert Hovhannisyan on tie-break.

      Kotanjian, the lowest rated player at the start of the competition, performed brilliantly to conclude the race with 6,5/9 points, adding the title and 31-elo points to his name.

      Replay games with analysis

      In the 69th Armenian Championship for women three players shared the first place with 7,0/9 points each – Shushanna Sargsyan, Maria Gevorgyan and Siranush Ghukasyan.

      Shushanna Sargsyan is declared new Champion thanks to the superior tie-break.

      Final standings (men):

      1-2. GM Kotanjian Tigran ARM 2500 and GM Hovhannisyan Robert Ar. ARM 2592 – 6,5
      3-4. GM Pashikian Arman ARM 2605 and GM Grigoryan Avetik ARM 2571 – 5,5
      5-6. GM Grigoryan Karen H. ARM 2584 and GM Ter-Sahakyan Samvel ARM 2574 – 4,5
      7-8. GM Andriasian Zaven ARM 2621 and GM Petrosian Tigran L. ARM 2654 – 4,0
      9. GM Babujian Levon ARM 2500 – 2,5
      10. GM Melkumyan Hrant ARM 2625 – 1,5

      Final standings (women):

      1-3. Sargsyan Shushanna ARM 2060, WFM Gevorgyan Maria ARM 2167 and Ghukasyan Siranush ARM 1962 – 7,0
      4. WIM Gasparian Narine ARM 2125 – 6,5
      5. Babayan Armine ARM 2078 – 5,5
      6. WIM Hairapetian Anna ARM 2213 – 5,0
      7. Gaboyan Susanna ARM 2063 – 3,5
      8. Mirzabekyan Svetlana ARM 1906 – 1,5
      9-10. Ghambaryan Hasmik ARM 1939 and Gevorgyan Anahit ARM 1878 – 1,0
