Irina sure missed a few quicker wins though.

Nice to see Vicary win. I voted for her funny blog as the best in that contest last year. Sorry to see Tuvshintugs lose but nice to see Anna win in that same game.

Of course I want to see Irina make a run for the title but interesting is Alisa Melekhina is playing well and she is apparently only 16 years old.

Now for the excitement of round 8.

Well Round 8 ended and the two leaders took a draw setting up a final. I wonder if they use tie breaks or a playoff games or game. In the past they have used playoff games so I will assume that here. Otherwise I would expect Irina to lose on tiebreaks.

here are the results from the official site after 8 rounds. Only one round to go tomorrow. Anna is catching up and only 1/2 point out of first place. Go Anna. Go Irina. Go Katerina.

        Position Player Points
        1-2 Irina Krush 6
        1-2 Katerina Rohonyan 6
        3 Anna Zatonskih 5½
        4-5 Batchimeg Tuvshintugs 4
        4-5 Tsagaan Battsetseg 4
        6-8 Camilla Baginskaite 3½
        6-8 Alisa Melekhina 3½
        6-8 Tatev Abrahamyan 3½
        9 Elizabeth Vicary 2½
        10 Chouchanik Airapetian ½

This has been a very exciting tournament with good competitive play, good tournament website, and good coverage of live games – especially with all the games displayed simultaneously on one page, live.

Best of all is the round robin format, rather than a swiss tournament; a double round robin would have been even better but I understand the amount of the prize fund doesn’t really qualify for a 2 week long tournament.

My congratulations to the ladies to be able to play so well with the gruelling two games a day schedule with no rest-day.

I hope the USCF Chess Life magazine does a good multipage feature and annotated reviews of several tournament games in a future issue.

I am happy that Airapetian finally got on the scoreboard with a draw.
