MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University blasted University of the East, 4-0, to claim their second straight title in the UAAP Season 74 women’s chess tournament last weekend at the Far Eastern University Mini Theater in Manila.

The Lady Archers, powered by Aices Salvador, Judith Pineda, Jan Jodilyn Fonda and Akiko Charmaine Suede toppled the UE squad composed of Chessa Mae Nadera, Jaymee Morales, Jacquilyn Sales and Jessica Visca.

The Lady Archers collected 39 points in 13 rounds of competition and hold a 9.5-point advantage over the Ateneo Lady Eagles, who hold 29.5 points.

Meanwhile, in the men’s division, defending champion FEU moved closer to completing a six-peat as the Tamaraws downed the UE Red Warriors, 2.5-1.5.

FEU now has 37.5 sports and hold a three-point lead over the University of Santo Tomas, which is in second place with 34.5 points.

The Growling Tigers kept their slim championship hopes alive after blanking National University, 4-0.

In the final round, the Tamaraws will gun for their 13th chess title against the University of the Philippines.

The matches will pit International Master Richelieu Salcedo III against Leo Daylo, Sheider Nebato versus Marc Christian Nazario, Lennon Heart Salgados against Wilbert Pilarta, and Antonio Chavez against Ywen Richard Lababo.

The action in the women’s division continues with La Salle taking on the rival Ateneo side.
