Good News: 7 years old and already a chess champion

Satvik Reddy has participated in four major chess tournaments so far this year and has 20 wins and only two losses in his K-1 age group.

Satvik, 7, the son of Dayakar and Madhavi Reddy, will be a second-grader at Jacksonville Country Day School this year. He has been playing chess since age 4 and started playing in tournaments last year. His first tournament was local and he took first place.

Because of his first win, his parents decided to let him keep going and he took top ranks in major tournaments in 2011. So far this year, he has 15 wins in the K-1 group from the North Florida Regionals in January, the Super State Championship in March and the Florida All-Stars Tournament in May. He also competed in the National Elementary Championships in Nashville, Tenn., in May and won five out of seven matches. He is ranked 28th out of 289 in K-1.

“I can’t beat him at chess anymore, even though I was his first teacher, teaching him basics,” his mother said.

He also played in the Grand Prix tournaments in Atlanta and took second place under K-3. He plans on playing in the Nationals K-12 in November.

In addition to chess, Satvik loves math and tennis. He recently won several U.S. Tennis Association matches.

Satvik says he wants to become chess Grand Master and be the No. 1-ranked player in the world. He also wants to be a doctor and play in Grand Slam tennis tournaments.
