Rivera Beach councilman wants chess-based afterschool program
      Sun-Sentinel

      December 1, 2012

Riviera Beach City Councilman Shelby L. Lowe has a new idea for an old game of strategy to help children behave and learn better: chess.

Lowe, who played chess as a youngster and while in the U.S. Navy for six years, has an idea for a K-12 afterschool program focused on the game not only to promote learning, but to provide a safe haven for the hundreds of children who are home alone after school’s out.

He has been working with the U.S. Chess Federation on the project, and hopes to soon be able to pitch a city-based rogram to the School District of Palm Beach County and to his colleagues on the City Council.

“Chess teaches you how to think,” Lowe said. “The skills required to achieve mastery in the game are parallel to those that can be used to help our students better achieve.”
