      Lost in transmission?

European Club Cup, Slovenia, Women's Chess, Yifan Hou

      [Event “ECC 2011 (Women)”]
      [Site “Slovenia”]
      [Date “2011.09.30”]
      [Round “6”]
      [White “Bojkovic, Natasa”]
      [Black “Hou, Yifan”]
      [Result “1-0”]

      1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Qxd4 Nc6 5. Bb5 Bd7 6. Qd3 g6 7. O-O Bg7 8. c4 Nf6 9. Nc3 O-O 10. h3 a6 11. Bxc6 Bxc6 12. Be3 Rb8 13. Nd4 Nd7 14. Rfd1 Nc5 15. Qc2 Bd7 16. Rac1 Rc8 17. After 70. Kf6 in the position above, it shows 1-0. However, it is not a losing position for Hou Yifan. 70…Kg4 or 70…Rh2 would lead to a drawn game. Does anyone know what happened? Did she resign or lose on time or is it simply an error in transmission?

She may have lost on time according to the transmission.

Hou might have hurriedly resigned thinking that Kxh6 results in mate. She might have expected black K to go to h7 restraining K to h file or even capturing the pawn after black K comes to f file.

Was it a sudden death time control?

Hou Yifan lost on time, as reported in the official website by GM Mikhalchishin, Tournament Director. See http://ecc2011.sahohlacnik.com/ (go to 6. Round Tournament Director’s eyes: Adrian Mikhalchishin.)
