Magnus Carlsen Comments on the Candidates 2014

Anand, Candidates Tournament, Khanty-Mansiysk, Magnus Carlsen

Carlsen: “Most of them are a tiny bit desperate”

With two rounds of the Candidates to go World Champion Magnus Carlsen has produced a new YouTube video giving his thoughts on who his next challenger will be and on the tournament in general. He responds to Vladimir Kramnik’s comments about people blundering against him, notes Vishy Anand has been the only stable player and admits he was wrong to write off Sergey Karjakin.

Carlsen last filmed his thoughts on the Candidates after Round 6, when he told his manager Espen Agdestein, “I don’t think it’s likely that Karjakin will make a comeback”. He revises that judgement now that Karjakin is almost the last obstacle in Anand’s path, but still thinks the Indian will qualify to play a rematch against him. This time round Espen was in Barcelona, so Carlsen talks to the camera alone.

Nakamura is the only player who can beat him.

What an arrogant video by Carlsen. Befitting his age but not the World Chess Championship Title…Apologies!

Nice, straightforward and honest comment from the world champion. Carlsen is probably smiling to see Anand winning Candidates. So Carlsen doesn’t need additional special preparation. He could just repeat what he did last year.
