Naka has been playing great chess since his London Grand Prix disaster. In his last three tournaments, he’s +8 with only 1 loss (Kramnik). In all seriousness, I wouldn’t be shocked if he gets his first win vs. Carlsen in a few days. Also, if he can manage 1.5/2 against Aronian/Carlsen, he should be back up around 2785 which would mean he’s gained back all ~30 rating points he lost in London. Not bad for someone who was in a major slump a few months ago.

Maybe in rating, but they’ve drawn their last 5 or 6 classical games.

It’s crystal clear that Carlsen is head and shoulders above everyone else. Any attempt to place some other player, whether Indian or Japanese, in Carlsen’s league is sheer folly. Drawing a few games with him doesn’t put you on the same level.

“Maybe in rating, but they’ve drawn their last 5 or 6 classical games.”

Thats’s because Naka has played white in 4 of their 5 latest games.

With black, however, he has a very bad score: Magnus has won 4 of the 5 latest games with white! He has also defeated Nakamura with black, and remember that he almost had a losing position with white against Magnus in London Chess Classics 2012.

So Naka has good drawing chances with white, but tends to lose with black against Magnus. Naka has never defeated Magnus, and defeating Magnus with black will be a very tough task indeed.
