      BBC News

The chessboard, created by Duchamp in 1946 and immortalised in the game at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1963, goes on sale in London on Monday.

Sotheby’s estimate it will sell for between £180,000 and £250,000.

…Chess was an obsession for the French-born artist – he devoted much of his life to studying the game and played in the French chess championships.

      Here is the full article.

“I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art — and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position.” Marcel Duchamp

Wow! I can’t believe that it is actually up for auction. To have the opportunity to buy this amazing chess set by probably the most notable conceptual artist of the 20th century . . . anybody looking to buy a couple of kidneys? Just kidding!

Lotery results are out here in a few minutes. If I win, my friends, I’ll get it! and I may allow you, Natalia, to play a game or two with those pieces. 😉 cross your fingers!

Obviously he felt this starting position was more ‘conceptual’ to the eye, and the board the wrong way, could well be for the same reason.

        Art?

It is generally regarded in the art world as a purposeful mistake. See Stephen Gerrard, Duchamp as Trickster, in the journal Tout-fait.
