From my point of view, the only question is if Kasparov will be a gentleman and go easy on Karpov to keep interest in the match. There is little question in my mind that Kasparov has retained much better form than Karpov has-witness Karpov latest debacle when he came out of retirement.

Kasparov clearly is prepping a full-time return to chess, which is a huge story. He wins this and then, much more compelling, he darts back into the battle for Anand’s title.

No doubt Kasparov is gunning for Anand and a return to the Top. It would be so cool if he combined his victory over Anand with a dual victory over Putin to put the World Chess Championship in the hands of the President of Russia.

        That would be cool, but…what?

Anon @5:47PM: Kasparov returning to chess and regaining the title is entirely plausible. Kasparov breaking Putin’s lock on Russia is just crazy talk. Putin and has puppet Medvedev are very strongly placed politically.
