      Mayor Cup chess: Aleksandrov, Deviatkin begin with a bang

      Top seed Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus and number two Andrei Deviatkin of Russia scored easy opening round victories over their Indian rivals as they began their campaigns with a bang in the 5th Mayor Cup International prize money chess tournament at the Chetna College today.

      Playing with white pieces, Grand Master Aleksandrov (ELO 2606) defeated Atul Pende (ELO 1744) in 38 moves on board one while GM Deviatkin (ELO 2577) outsmarted Prasad Aurangabadkar (ELO 1742) by opting for a Caro-Cann defence after taking control on the 17th move.

      On board 3, V M Rajeev (ELO 1740) blundered twice against 3rd seeded GM Nikolai Chadaev (ELO 2563) of Russia and went down in just 23 moves after preferring a Sicilian defense.

      Results of top 9 tables: GM Aleksandrov Aleksej 1 beat Atul Pendse 0, Prasad Aurangabadkar 0 lost to GM Andrei Deviatkin 1, GM Nikolai Chadaev 1 beat Rajeev V M 0, Sudhakar Rokade (ELO 1732) 0 lost to GM B Adhiban (ELO 2555) 1, GM Oliver Barbosa (ELO 2550)1 beat P Atharvaa (ELO 1730) 0, Atharv Vaidya (ELO 1727) 0 lost to GM Abhijit Kunte (ELO 2538) 1, Pushkaraj Kambli (ELO 1710) 0 lost to GM Mark Paragua Mark (ELO 2521) 1, GM Ziaur Rahman (ELO 2520) 1 beat Rupesh Bhogal (ELO 1705) 0, Divya Garg (ELO 1701) 0 lost to GM Kirill Stupak (ELO 2513) 1.
